The saltwater crocodile is the world's largest living reptile, and Bhitarkanika's mangrove creeks hold India's best population, including some of the biggest individuals recorded anywhere. Sightings here are a genuine wildlife spectacle rather than a routine encounter — these are apex predators of the tidal creeks, not the smaller muggers seen elsewhere in India. Boat safaris through Bhitarkanika's mangrove creeks to see India's largest saltwater crocodiles.
An ambush predator that lies almost fully submerged near creek banks, striking with explosive speed. Highly territorial; dominant males patrol long stretches of creek and will displace rivals and even mugger crocodiles.
Fish and crustaceans sustain it day to day, but a large adult can and does take deer, wild boar, and livestock that stray to the water's edge.

Boat safaris through Bhitarkanika's creek network at low tide give the best odds, when crocodiles haul out onto exposed mudbanks. Keep a respectful distance — this is not a species to approach on foot.
Plan field days around Jan–Dec: light is often strongest at dawn and dusk, when many mammals and birds are most active. Work with a naturalist who knows local movement patterns — they will position you ethically while improving your odds of a encounter in key reserves across India.
