About this location
Gahirmatha, on Odisha's coast between the mouths of the Brahmani and Baitarani rivers, hosts one of the largest olive ridley sea turtle rookeries on Earth. In peak years, more than half a million females haul out to nest across a handful of nights during the arribada — a synchronized mass-nesting event that turns kilometres of beach into a living carpet of turtles. Access is tightly regulated to protect the nesting beaches, so visits go through the forest department and local operators working out of nearby Bhitarkanika.

Photography tips for Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary
Arribada viewing is arranged through the forest department and local operators based near Bhitarkanika — expect a boat transfer followed by a supervised beach walk on permitted nights, usually timed around the new or full moon in the January–March nesting window. Outside the arribada, the coastline is quieter but still holds nesting activity and rich birdlife on the mudflats.
Conservation: The sanctuary and its offshore waters are a protected nesting habitat under India's Wildlife Protection Act, with seasonal fishing restrictions enforced during the nesting season to reduce turtle mortality from trawling.
