About this species

The Dugong — the real-life origin of mermaid legends — is India's only herbivorous marine mammal, grazing on seagrass beds in shallow coastal waters. India's most significant population is found around the Gulf of Mannar and the Andaman Islands. Sightings require dedicated boat trips and considerable patience.
