Caracal (Caracal caracal) — wildlife photography in India

(c) sarayoung, some rights reserved (CC BY-NC), uploaded by sarayoung

About this species

The caracal is one of India's most elusive cats, a lithe, tufted-eared predator famous for leaping more than three metres straight up to snatch birds out of the air. Its Indian range has contracted to a scatter of arid and semi-arid pockets in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and even experienced trackers can spend years without a confirmed sighting. Tracking the rare, tufted-eared caracal in Rajasthan's arid scrub and desert.

Behavior

Almost entirely nocturnal and crepuscular, and famously elusive even where present — most confirmed Indian sightings come from camera traps rather than direct encounters. Solitary and highly territorial.

Diet

Primarily birds, taken in spectacular vertical leaps, along with rodents and other small mammals.

When and Where to Photograph Caracal

Night drives with a spotlight in known desert scrub territory offer the only realistic chance, and even then a sighting is exceptional rather than expected — treat any encounter as a rare bonus, not a target to plan a trip around.

Plan field days around Jan–Dec: light is often strongest at dawn and dusk, when many mammals and birds are most active. Work with a naturalist who knows local movement patterns — they will position you ethically while improving your odds of a encounter in Desert National Park.
