The southern section of the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary and a core part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Excellent for close-up elephant and gaur photography, with the tea and coffee estate landscape of Wayanad providing a unique pastoral-forest backdrop.

Wayanad is split into two sections. Muthanga in the south, near Sulthan Bathery, has more open forest and frequent elephant sightings. Tholpetty in the north, near the Karnataka border, is denser and better for tiger and leopard. Jeep safaris (about two hours) run at both, and are sometimes suspended in the dry season because of fire risk.
