Mantises (Order Mantodea) — wildlife photography in India

(c) Anil Kumar Verma, some rights reserved (CC BY-NC), uploaded by Anil Kumar Verma

About this species

India's praying mantises range from the cryptic to the spectacular, found across forest and scrub — including orchid mantises and giant Indian mantises that ambush prey with lightning-fast raptorial forelegs. Guide to India's praying mantises: species, camouflage, habitat, best season and macro photography tips for mantis watching.

Behavior

Ambush predators that rely on stillness and camouflage rather than pursuit, striking with raptorial forelegs in a fraction of a second once prey comes within range. Mantises are also one of the few insects able to rotate their head independently of their body, giving them an oddly attentive, "watchful" appearance.

Diet

Predatory on other insects, taken by ambush; larger species will occasionally take small lizards, frogs, or even hummingbirds at flowers, though this is rare in Indian species.

When and Where to Photograph Mantises

Check flowering shrubs slowly and methodically — flower mantises are near-perfect mimics and are usually found by patient scanning rather than by seeing the animal move first. Evenings after rain often bring out more activity as humidity rises.

Plan field days around Jun–Oct: light is often strongest at dawn and dusk, when many mammals and birds are most active. Work with a naturalist who knows local movement patterns — they will position you ethically while improving your odds of a encounter in key reserves across India.
