About this location
The inspiration for Kipling's The Jungle Book, Kanha's vast meadows (maidans) ringed by sal and bamboo forest are unmatched for open-terrain wildlife photography. Home to the last significant population of hard-ground barasingha, with excellent year-round tiger sightings.

Safari Zones
Kanha has four core zones and four buffer zones, entered through three main gates. Book Kanha or Kisli zones and enter via Khatia gate; Mukki zone via Mukki gate; Sarhi zone via Sarhi gate. Core zones close for the monsoon (July–September); buffer zones are useful when core permits are sold out. Permits are booked on the MP forest department's online portal.

By Air
Jabalpur Airport is the nearest airport, about 160 km away, for Khatia/Kisli; Raipur (~250 km) is closer to Mukki, and Nagpur (~260 km) is another option. Continue by taxi or pre-booked cab.
By Rail
Jabalpur is the nearest railway station, about 165 km away, with Gondia (~145 km) as an alternative. Taxis and autos cover the last stretch.
By Road
Khatia gate is about 160 km (~4 hours) from Jabalpur via Mandla. Mukki gate, on the south-eastern side, is ~250 km from Raipur. From Nagpur it is ~260 km via Seoni.

Photography tips for Kanha National Park
Jeep safaris run from the Mukki, Kisli, and Khatia gates. The open meadows — the setting that inspired Kipling's Jungle Book — give long sightlines for tiger and barasingha sightings.
Conservation: Saved the barasingha (swamp deer) from the edge of extinction: the park's population grew from under 100 individuals to a stable, self-sustaining herd.
