About this location
Kashmir's most famous wildlife sanctuary, protecting the Dachigam nallah valley just outside Srinagar. The sole stronghold of the critically endangered hangul (Kashmir stag), Dachigam's autumn rutting season is one of the rarest and most dramatic wildlife spectacles in India.

Dachigam is divided into Lower and Upper Dachigam. Lower Dachigam, entered from the Harwan gate, is where most visitors go — winter and early spring are best for hangul and Himalayan black bear. Upper Dachigam is rugged alpine terrain best explored May–August and needs special permission from the J&K Wildlife Department.
